International congress of zoology opens in Beijing
The XIX International Zoological Congress opened on August 23 in Beijing. Nearly 700 zoologists from more than 40 countries and regions attended the conference. Also present at its opening ceremony were highranking officials and scientific celebraties, including State Councilor Chen Zhili, President of the National Natural Science Foundation of China Chen Yiyu, CAS Vice President Chen Zhu, Vice President of the Chinese Association for Science and Technology Zeng Qingcun, Vice Director of the State Forestry Administration Zhao Xuemin and Chair of the International Zoological Congress Committee John Buckeridge. CAS President Lu Yongxiang sent his congratulations. The meeting is jointly organized by China Zoological Society, the CAS Institute of Zoology, China Wildlife Conservation Association and China International S&T Conference center. The fiveday congress, which is held for the first time in China, consists of more than 50 interesting symposia, covering a wide range of branches of zoology such as evolution and systematics, ecology, conservation biology, reproductive biology, diseases, ethics and philosophy, according to Prof. Chen Yiyu, Chair of the Congress.
